Friends of Lighthouse School (FoLS) provides additional support to the school to ensure it can deliver a broad range of services and support to pupils, their families and the wider autism community. This may range from specialist equipment or technology to aid communication to out of school activities to encourage social skills eg residentials, recreational clubs, holiday clubs, outings (with transport where possible).
A key area for development is parent and family support with guidance and workshops to promote health, wellbeing and general coping strategies. We aim to support the school to provide respite for families and hope, in time, to be a resource centre for other local autism charities to benefit the wider autism community.
Nicky Cook, one of our parents, completed The Abbey Dash in November with two friends. They raised an amazing £555 which will be used to fund much needed exercise equipment for our students. Thanks to family, staff from Lighthouse and all Nicky’s colleagues from ASDA for their generous support. Special thank you to Nicky’s friends, Tracy Cassidy and Donna Martin for supporting the school.
Abbey Dash“It was out first 10k, it was a hard challenge but we were determined to finish it. When we got to the 2k point some of the elite runners were on their way back, we crossed over and that was an OMG point, but we carried on with the kids at the back of our minds and how they would benefit…..an amazing day!”
Two members of the Answer Team based in Leeds have raised £1140 for our work at Lighthouse School.
Mike Blamires stepped up to the ultimate challenge of the Spartathlon in Greece in September for Lighthouse. One of the most difficult ultra-distance races in the world. At most, only about a third of the runners who leave Athens end the course in Sparta. The goal of all participants is to cover the course – 250 kms within the 36-hour time limit. Each of the 75 race control points has its own time limitations and should a runner arrive later than the official closing time he or she will be eliminated from the race. Read about Mike’s experience on his dedicated challenge page on the website. Many thanks to Mike from all at Lighthouse School for his fantastic achievement with £740 raised.
Watch this space because he wants to do it all again next year. Mike you are fantastic, and we look forward to hearing about the training in 2014.
