Why is Maths important?

Maths tells us how to look at the world in a numerical and relation way. We use this understanding with logical tools learnt in teaching to help us problem solve in all areas of life. Strong mathematical skills help students thrive in a heavily quantified world and give them the skills to breakdown and tackle problems at work, future education and in life. Each step of the curriculum from key stage to key stage is designed to support your child so that they will leave with a Maths qualification suitable for them and their next destination. We also ensure they have the skills to be as independent as possible and be able to tackle real life scenarios and situations.

What do students learn?

KS3
Our Key Stage 3 Mathematics curriculum provides a broad and ambitious foundation that is matched to National Curriculum expectations. Students develop their understanding across the key areas of number, algebra, ratio, geometry, measures, statistics and probability through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge and confidence over time.

Recognising that students join us with different mathematical experiences, the curriculum is designed to secure fundamental skills, strengthen prior learning and develop mathematical fluency. Through opportunities to reason, investigate and solve problems, students learn to apply mathematics in meaningful real-world contexts, including the workplace, the environment and everyday life. This prepares students with the resilience, independence and mathematical understanding needed for success at Key Stage 4 and beyond.

KS45
Students following a vocational pathway will develop the confidence to use mathematics in everyday situations. Learning focuses on practical number skills, including budgeting, handling money, measuring, interpreting data, using percentages and solving real-life problems. Through project-based learning and close links with the Communication qualification, students apply mathematical skills in meaningful contexts, helping them make informed decisions and develop the numeracy skills needed for adult life, further learning and employment.

Students following a Level 1 pathway will complete Mathematics Functional Skills (Entry 1 – 3). Students will learn through a practical, supportive and highly contextualised approach that links mathematics to real-life situations. Teaching will be differentiated to meet the needs of students across Entry Level 1, 2 and 3, with a strong focus on developing confidence, independence and functional numeracy skills.

Students following a Level 2 pathway will complete GCSE Mathematics, which will enable students to develop the following: knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical concepts and methods, competency to apply mathematical skills in a range of context and confidence in mathematical problem solving.
