Horticulture

Horticulture provides our students with an understanding of the natural world and connection with nature. Student physically participate in their learning and are given a socially quiet time to reflect. In doing so, Horticulture can have a significant benefit to their wellbeing. Horticulture develops students’ patience and practical skills. It also supports students in appreciating naturally grown food – as part of the ‘from garden-to-plate’ strategy. This is especially important with our students who often are inclined to eat processed foods. 

What do students learn?

KS3
In Key Stage 3 all students get a taste of gardening across all seasons. They will learn how to grow vegetables and flowers and understand how plants feed themselves and are responsible for all life on Earth. They will also develop their crafting skills to make items for the garden including bean teepees, scarecrows and garden ornaments.

KS45
Students can choose Horticulture as one of their options subjects. They will study for a Level 1 BTEC qualification in Land Based Studies. They will develop their knowledge and skills of soil development and analysis, propagation and sowing seeds, and the care of plants.
